After our tour this morning of the grand Shakenhurst Estate in England, I thought I’d share a book I purchased back in August that is one of the most comprehensive and best books I’ve ever found on the English country house. The English Country House by Mary Miers is truly in a class of its own. In the BNOTP Library: The English Country House: From the Archives of Country . Once I started reading Celebration House, I fell into it easily. This book is very easy to get into and the characters are well defined and likable. They each have a separate personality that is really believable and works for the book. I have to admit that though it's really well written, it seemed to fall a little flat at times/5.

The English country house is most often conceived as a private, intimate place, a getaway from working life. A pergola, a sundial, a croquet lawn, a herbaceous border of soft planting; here is a space to wander and relax, to share secrets, and above all to enjoy afternoon tea/5(49).   Malcolm Kelsall, The Great Good Place: the Country House and English Literature (). Virginia C. Kenny, The Country House Ethos in English literature, Themes of Personal Retreat and National Expansion. (). William Hurrell Mallock. The New Republic; or, Culture, Faith and Philosophy in an English Country House. New York ().

"The book celebrates the enduring legacy of the English country house and the families who for centuries have been guardians of their fate. For the aficionado of architecture, interiors, history or way of life, this is a keeper for your collection.". This course is to be an interdisciplinary programme enabling students to examine, by way of a thesis, aspects of the history of the English country house between and Students will be encouraged to consider the interrelation of architectural.
